Brigitte Klein, GTZ, Germany

Dr. Klein heads the Sector Projects Financial Systems Development and Private Sector Development in the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) in Eschborn. She is also Chair of the CGAP Micro insurance Sub-working Group on Regulation, Supervision and Policy. Her key qualifications are in the field of financial system development, with focus on micro and rural finance. She has professional experience in project planning, management and implementation.

During her tenure with GTZ, Ms. Klein was based in India for six years. As a team leader and principal advisor to the NABARD GTZ Rural Finance Programme she led the German technical cooperation contribution in the areas of self-help group linkage banking and the revitalisation of rural cooperative banks. Prior to this assignment, she held positions in GTZ Headoffice. She was further seconded as GTZ young professional to the FAO, Rome in the field of agricultural finance.

Before joining GTZ, she was lecturer and research associate at Humboldt University of Berlin on agricultural market development and freelance consultant in the field of Rural und Microfinance. She earned her Ph.D. in economics from the Free University in Berlin, conducting empirical research on rural financial markets in Colombia. She also holds a master’s degree in economics from the Free University of Berlin.
