Making insurance work for the poor

From 3 to 5 November 2009, the 5th International Microinsurance Conference took place in Dakar, Senegal. This event was hosted by the Microinsurance Network (formerly the CGAP Working Group on Microinsurance), the Munich Re Foundation, supported by the Conference Interafricaine des Marches d’Assurances (CIMA), the African Insurance Organisation (AIO), the Fédération des Sociétés d’Assurances de Droit National Africaines (FANAF), the World Bank, the Journal of Risk and Insurance, the German Association for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

During the 5th International Microinsurance Conference over 400 experts and practitioners from 63 countries discussed new approaches for the provision of affordable insurance products to the world’s poor. In a new cooperation venture with the renowned “Journal of Risk and Insurance”, researchers were invited to present their work on the economic effects of this fast-growing risk management tool on the low-income market.
