Call for grant applications - Fog collection and fog net technology projects

Collecting water from fog offers an unexplored source for water in many regions across the globe where other options are not available. Recent projects have shown that a single fog collector of some 50 square meters can collect over 1.000 litres of drinking water per fog day. The history of fog water collection is long. In October 2018 the largest fog collector park of the world, the CloudFisher plant with 1.674 square metres on Mount Boutmezguida in Morocco, was inaugurated and provides more than 1.200 people in 16 villages with clean drinking water. Each household has got an own tap and eight cisterns were built to serve the water management.
The potential of fog harvesting is huge. However, a considerable number of projects for collecting water from fog and dew are currently known, these being mainly in Latin America (e.g. Chile) and Africa (e.g. Tanzania). Even though, great development opportunities for the technology exist in various parts of the world.
To assist the development of projects for collecting water from fog, the WaterFoundation (www.wasserstiftung.de) and the Munich Re Foundation (www.munichre-foundation.org) are awarding one or more grants for the provision of new or the enhancement of existing fog collection projects. Both organizations are the founders of a FogNet Alliance in order to improve fog net technology in general, provide knowledge and serve fog net projects including management. The grant sum of €50,000 in this call will be available in 2019, 2020 and in 2021 amounting to a total of €150,000. Payments will be made in accordance with progress (milestones) towards completion of the project. A co-funding of 20%-50% is preferred. Additional funds are to be discussed depending on the size of the project (options).
Projects that apply for a grant should be completed by the end of the grant period (2021), after this the projects run by themselves and become self-sustaining.
