    CO2 emissions inevitably arise from the projects, conferences and office activities of the foundation. These are recorded as part of a climate assessment and offset with the help of a compensation project. In 2025, we are once again supporting the project “Clean water for schools and families in Kenya” by purchasing CO₂ certificates.
    This year’s selection focuses on continuity: having supported the project last year, we are now continuing our commitment. The aim is to enable long-term impact and sustainably strengthen successful structures. The project stands out for its high effectiveness, scalability, and strong social value. It is institutionally well established and aligned with our project engagement in Kenya.

    How does it work?

    The initiative is implemented by the organization Impact Water in cooperation with First Climate. In public schools, cost-effective, robust water purification systems are installed that provide clean drinking water directly on site – without electricity and without heating. Teachers and students are trained in their use, the systems are regularly maintained, and water quality is continuously monitored. As a result, water no longer needs to be boiled using wood, charcoal, or other fossil fuels. This saves CO₂ emissions, reduces indoor air pollution from smoke, and lowers ongoing costs for schools and families.

    Beyond climate protection, the project brings immediate improvements to everyday school life: children fall ill less often, spend more time in class, and have constant access to safe drinking water. Clean water also enables better hygiene and preventive healthcare, especially for girls and young women. The project thus demonstrates how climate action and social impact go hand in hand.

    Today, Impact Water’s solutions already reach over 24 million students worldwide in more than 60,000 schools – including in Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda. The initiative clearly shows that this approach works, is scalable, and delivers long-term impact.
