The ILO's Impact Insurance Forum
The ILO’s Impact Insurance Forum provided an interactive and open environment for discussing lessons learned and exchanging experiences on forefront issues confronting practitioners working in inclusive insurance. This year’s forum focused on the topic "Becoming a digital insurer”. It explored the various digital tools and technology that can be used to improve insurance solutions for emerging markets. It will focus on how to improve customer experience, automate business processes and use data better so that insurance providers can make the most of their investments to achieve high uptake and sustained customer use. The Forum also explored what insurance practitioners can do to start the digital journey and to ensure that customer risks are mitigated along the process.

Parallel session 3 - Creating an enabling environment
Hosted by a2ii
More than a decade has passed since the first microinsurance regulations were introduced in India, the Philippines, Peru and Mexico (2005-2007) and important insights have been gained on what constitutes effective regulation and supervision. At the same time, supervisors have to react to a rapidly changing environment, with insurance being increasingly sold by new types of agents and as products being bundled with other financial and non-financial services. This has a severe impact on the supervisors’ ability to regulate and creates new frontiers in consumer protection.

Parallel session 7 - Actuarial capacity and the implications for regulation
Hosted by the International Actuarial Association (IAA)
It is well-known that actuarial skills are limited in most developing insurance markets. Furthermore, the lack of suitably qualified people with actuarial skills is frequently considered a barrier to the development of financially sound inclusive insurance markets. The International Actuarial Association, through its MI Working Group, has long recognized the need to develop actuarial capacity for inclusive insurance markets.

Parallel session 14 - Technology 2: Health
The session explored to what extent technology driven innovations that are increasingly seen to shape the future of insurance will also have an impact on microinsurance. Over the last 12 months, “InsTech” had been announced as the long overdue update of old-fashioned insurance businesses, and has attracted 1 bn USD investment in the first half of 2016. None of this attention relates to microinsurance, but the objectives of InsTech – to provide new products to new customers in ways that increase their satisfaction while reducing cost – are the same objectives as those of microinsurance. Hence, convergence will benefit both sides: innovations in microinsurance can lead to better service provision to clients in developed countries, and tech-based innovations in conventional insurance can translate into breakthroughs in microinsurance.

Plenary 4 - Is this microinsurance´s UBER moment?
Hosted by Cenfri
The WEF’s report on the future of financial services (2014) predicts that the insurance industry is the financial industry that will be most disrupted by technology. Disruptive technology has fundamentally changed other industries such as private transport (Uber) and accommodation (Airbnb), transforming them from provider-centric to consumer-centric operations. The session discussed if technology will do the same for insurance?
